Grand Knight’s Beacon Light

I cannot believe another Christmas holiday has flown by again.  But it has!  I hope and pray that this was a joyous time for all, full well knowing that there are those among us who are not able to say that.  The passing of loved ones does not take a holiday.  But, through our faith we know that they are now in a better place waiting for the day we too will join them.

The second half of our calendar year is under way and we have already had our Knights Free Throw Championship, which was a great success.  There will be pictures and announcements of the winners at our next meeting.  We have many events scheduled for the coming months.  We hope to have a first degree ceremony on Saturday, February 11.  The St. Patrick's Day Dance is scheduled for Saturday, March 11.  Please mark your calendars and keep your eyes open for the Council calendar from Ray Marr.

I want to say a special thank you to all those Brother Knights that have stepped up to chair or participate in the committees to run our fundraising and social activities.  We are a special Council with an abundance of charitable and caring men.  You make me proud to represent you as your Grand Knight.

January 9 Meeting Notes – 30 Knights attending

Grand Knight’s Report

Convention: GK Ed Keller and DGK Ray Marr attended the NC KofC midyear convention in Charlotte. Emphasis was on Council growth, as well as organizing family-oriented activities so members socialize more often.

Upcoming events: A number of events are coming soon that need Knights to step forward and volunteer, including St. Patrick’s Day Dance on March 11 (needs a leader), Fish Fry on April 21, staffing Carolina Blonde Beer booths at A Taste of Charlotte on June 2-4, and a St. Mark parking lot garage sale June 30.

Foundation for the Future: St. Mark Council has already paid more than $7,700 toward the 2005-2006 Fraternal Year (July 1-June 30) pledge of $10,000 toward Foundation for the Future.

Committee Reports

Financial Secretary’s Report: Brother Jim Bossert, Financial Secretary, reported that 48 Council members had paid their 2006 dues. The goal is to have dues for all 206 members of Council 12654 paid by the end of January.

Program Committee: Ray Marr said the Council is reporting more than 13,000 volunteer hours in 2005, including 154 hours for visits to the sick; 65 visits for bereavement purposes, 35 blood drive participants, 2,969 church hours, 3,007 community  hours, 3,986 youth hours, 2,611 miscellaneous hours and 436 fraternal hours.

Church Committee: Sergio Miranda reported that 50 large bags of Angel Tree gifts were delivered to a number of locations in the North Mecklenburg Community. He thanked Jason Peplinski, Mr. and Mrs. John O’Neill, Ed Kenney, Ray Fitzgerald, Kevin Urban, Andy Kopchinsky, Stan Moore and Joe Scallan. Together, these individuals dedicated 40 hours of work to the 2005 Angel Tree effort at St. Mark.

Council Committee: Ed Keller reported that the NC Knights State Bowling Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, March 11 in Winston-Salem. Team bowling begins at noon, and the cost is $75 per team. See GK Ed Keller if you are interested. This is the same day as the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner-Dance sponsored by St. Mark Knights of Columbus.

Family Committee: Andy Kopchinski asked for suggestions for a Spring family outing. (He mentioned that school parents get together for Pizza Nights at Ci Ci’s Pizza in Rosedale. Parents are allowed to cook the Pizzas for the kids.) Send Andy any suggestions at 76triumph@adelphia.net.

Youth Committee: Sean McSweeney reported that the Free Throw Championship is scheduled for 10-12 noon at St. Mark school gymnasium on Monday, January 16. Volunteers were needed.

Treasurer’s Report: St. Mark Council is reporting $5,660 in the bank as of December 31, 2005. Income in December was $6,960, primarily from Christmas Tree sales, and expenses were $14,329.

New Business

Banner Proposed: Ray Marr introduced a proposal to purchase a banner for St. Mark Council. The “official” KofC Council banner is 30 x 40 inches and can be used at Council meetings, in parades and at State KofC conventions. The price is approximately $500-$600 through two known suppliers. Lower-cost alternatives (such as finding someone locally to make a banner) will be explored and reported at a future meeting.

Life Teen Request Approved: By voice vote, the Council approved a $500 request from Life Teen to create a contingency fund for teens who were not able to pay transportation costs to the March for Life in Washington, D.C. on February 22-23.

State Raffle Tickets: Each Knight in Council 12654 will receive five raffle tickets to sell for the NC Knights Raffle. Each ticket is $5, and St. Mark Council will keep $2.50 for each ticket sold. First prize is an Alaska cruise; second prize is a vacation to Hawaii. Last year, sales of state raffle tickets netted St. Mark Council $1,250. The deadline for returning raffle ticket sales proceeds to the State KofC is May 8.

Church needs armed services coordinator: Mike Leahy reported that St. Mark Church needs a coordinator for getting former or current members of the armed services to carry flags representing different branches of the U.S. Military on special holiday services such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Fish Fry Announced: The St. Mark Knight of Columbus Fish Fry will be on Friday, April 21, from 5-8 p.m. David Barnes will provide food and cookers, and the Council will provide the manpower. Stay tuned for opportunities to sell tickets to family, friends and n eighbors. This event will benefit Foundation for the Future.

New Knights Insurance Agent: The New Field Agent for St. Mark, Rick Keyser, was introduced and spoke to the Council. He will be calling on all members of Council 12654 for life insurance needs.

Recognition

CORRECTION: The December Knight of the Month was Joe Scallan, shown at left with GK Ed Keller. The December newsletter mistakenly identified Joe.

Will O'Brien was elected January Knight of the Month for his efforts in securing the Lowe’s location for Operation LAMB and for organizing Boy Scout participation.

Jim and Terri Bossert were elected the January Family of the Month.  Jim does great work as Council 12654’s Financial Secretary, and Terry organized the Knight’s Ladies group and was a leader in the recent Bake Sale that benefited Foundation for the Future.
