Grand Knights report

State Deputy Bob Grabasky has asked St. Mark Council to be Host Council for the January 2007 Midyear NC KofC convention at the University Hilton in Charlotte. The Host Council keeps two Knights at the registration desk on Friday and Saturday of the convention weekend. In addition to collecting money, handing out tickets and keeping track of registration, the Host Council operates a hospitality suite throughout the weekend, and provides Ushers and Eucharistic Ministers for Mass on Sunday. Grand Knight Ed Keller asked members to consider Grabasky’s request and be prepared to discuss it at the May 1 Council meeting.

Tom McGahey announced that elections for Council officers will be held at the May 1 Council meeting. Nominees for the 2006-2007 Fraternal Year are Grand Knight: Ed Keller; Deputy Grand Knight: Dick Christian; Chancellor: Jim Lotito; Recorder: Mike Mullen; Treasurer: Chip Marshall; Advocate: Chris Tucci; Warden: Kevin Csehoski; Inside Guard: Bruce Milstead; Outside Guard: Jimmy Carter.

Upcoming Charity Events

April 21 Fish Fry: Ray Marr reported on preparations for the KofC Fish Fry on Friday, April 21. Eat-in or take out. Plates are $9 and include flounder, shrimp, hushpuppies, French fries, coleslaw and iced tea. Kid’s meals are $3 and consist of chicken nuggets, fries and beverage. Deserts furnished by the St. Mark Lady Knights will also be on sale. All proceeds will go to Foundation for the Future.

April 24 Golf Tournament: The St. Mark Knights of Columbus Spring Charity Golf Tournament is set for Monday, April 24 at Verdict Ridge in Denver. Shotgun start is 11 a.m. Cost to play is $85, which includes dinner after the tournament. Businesses are still needed for hole sponsorships at $100 each. Contact Ed Keller at edwardkeller@bellsouth.net or 704-655-8190.

May 19-29 Lowe’s Motor Speedway: Bill Pugh told the Council about the opportunity to drive shuttle buses for the spring races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Council costs are virtually zero, so every dollar earned is profit for Council charities. Volunteers can contact Pugh at bpugh@gerdauameristeel.com.

Committee and activity reports

Chancellor’s Report on Vocations: St. Mark Council will prepare care packages for 18 seminarians who will be assigned to the Charlotte Diocese. Chancellor Jim Lotito reported that he is now tracking down and confirming addresses for the seminarians. He said their needs include computer supplies, printer ink and paper. Discussion will continue at the May meeting about the best way to purchase the items and prepare the care packages.

Membership: Mark Conter reported that a Membership Blitz is scheduled after all Masses the weekend of April 22-23. First degree is tentatively set for Saturday, May 6.

Programs: Ray Marr reported that he has submitted 50 event reports to Supreme for St. Mark Council.

Church: Sergio Miranda thanks St. Mark Knights for their contributions to care packages for Brother Trevor Hehn, who is stationed in Iraq with the U.S. Army. Two 30-lb packages – one for Trevor and the other a collection of smaller care packages for soldiers in Trevor’s unit – were mailed on March 11.

Youth: Sean McSweeney said two of the winners at the St. Mark KofC Free Throw Championship are competing at the upcoming NC Free Throw Championship.

St. Patrick’s Day Dance: Ed Kenney said that the St. Patrick’s Day Dance brought the Council nearly $900 in profit. Attendance was estimated at 120.

Candy Bar Sales: Grand Knight Ed Keller reported that nearly 1,300 chocolate bars have been sold since the candy was donated to St. Mark Council last month. The chocolate bars are selling for $1 each, and extra donations have produced a total of about $1,500 in revenue. As a result, the Council directed $1,000 of the profit to Foundation for the Future and $500 to Operation LAMB (Least Among My Brethren).

State KofC Raffle: Raffle sales chief Andy Kopchinski thanks Knights for their support of the 2006 State KofC raffle. He recognized Dennis O’Rourke for selling 40 extra tickets. (Each Knight was given three $5 tickets to sell. The Council gets $2.50 in profit per ticket.) Kopchinski asked Knights to continue pushing ticket sales up until the May 8 deadline.

Treasurer’s Report: St. Mark Council had $10,824 in the bank as of March 31. Income for the month was $3,458 (chocolate bar sales and St. Patrick’s Day Dance), while charity and program expenses were $3,031

New/Unfinished Business

Volunteer opportunity: Council members learned of a request from Sandra Brakefield to set up the worship area in the Family Center for Senior’s Day on April 21.

Funding request approved: The Council approved a request from Mary Alice Hollars, head of the elderly ministry at St. Mark, for $200 for one-half of the cost of 80 health screening kits. Presbyterian Hospital is paying the other $200.

June 10 Church Bazaar: Dick Christian reported on preparations for the June 10 St. Mark Church Bazaar. He has met with the Parish Council, as well as Donna Smith (St. Mark Director of Religious Education) and Mary Alice Hollars to coordinate how the Knights will be involved.

Automobile Raffle (as part of the Church Bazaar): Christian led a discussion about the raffle of a $12,000 car from an area dealership. Members who had been involved in car raffles with other organizations were concerned that there was not enough time to promote the raffle and sell enough tickets to cover the cost between now and June 10. (The likely scenario would be to sell 1,000 tickets at $25 each. The break-even point for a $12,000 car is 500 tickets.) The decision was made to promote the car raffle as part of the Church Bazaar by having the car in a conspicuous location on the St. Mark property, but extend the raffle deadline until the Fall to ensure there is enough time to sell a sufficient number of tickets.
