Here we are well through another summer. I hope everyone has been able to enjoy their children and other loved ones with the pace maybe not so hectic. This typically is a slower time period for our Council as well. But that doesn't mean we aren’t active.  Our handyman crew led by Dick Mahoney pulled off another wonderful act by moving a St. Mark parishioner in need this month (a mother of seven). Our First Degree Team held another installation bringing two new members, Chris Berger and Todd Williamson, into our Council. Our members continued to contribute to the assistance of a brother in need, bringing much needed financial support to a couple struggling to care for a parent.

I did see a very positive sign of the spirit of our Church community.  Monsignor Richard invited the Sisters of Mercy from Belmont Abbey to solicit raffle ticket sales for a new car. The proceeds are going toward Catherine’s House, which provides shelter for homeless families.  Many parishioners were purchasing tickets for this worthy cause.

I mention this because the St. Mark Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a car raffle of our own shortly. The sale dates and details are not yet final, but I hope that we can rally our parishioners, friends and neighbors effectively.

On a personal note, please keep my wife Jackie in your prayers.  She is home after having hip replacement surgery after a fall this month.  She is doing well and our sincere thanks to all the well wishes and offers of help. GK Ed Keller

·          Work continues on plans for a new church building at St. Mark.

·          Foundation for the Future has $1.5 million in the bank and $2.5 million in pledges from parishioners.

·          To be able to start construction, the Charlotte Diocese says that a parish must have 40% of the total cost in the cash and 30% in pledges. The remaining 30% can be borrowed with a maximum 10-year mortgage.

·          For a church building in the $5-6 million range, one additional capital campaign will be needed at St. Mark.

June 10, 2006 Meeting Notes

Grand Knight’s Report

·         GK Ed Keller received a letter from Monsignor Kerin thanking St. Mark Council for the $1,000 annual gift provided by Council 12654.

·         Keller asked that all Knights to ensure that their “spirit of charity and cooperation shines through in all activities at the Church.” He said miscommunications and crossed wires are unavoidable since many St. Mark committees are also working on events to raise money to build a new church.  “The worst thing that a Knight can do is be territorial. If we have to change our plans, or cancel an event because it is competing with another ministry at St. Mark, so be it. Let’s always be on our best behavior,” Keller said.

·         Keller announced that several Council leadership positions are open, including Community and Health Director (coordinates with Huntersville Police Department, Meals on Wheels, etc.) Blood Drive Coordinator, and Lecter (coordinates speakers for “good of the Council”)

St. Mark Knight entering seminary: Monsignor Bellow reported that St. Mark Knight Chris Alar has decided to join the Marians of the Immaculate Conception.

Treasurer’s Report: Chip Marshall reported that St. Mark Council had $12,059 in the bank as of June 30. Income for June was $5,512 and expenses were $5,551.

Chancellor’s Report: Chancellor Jim Lotito said he is working on getting a new set of seminarian names and addresses so that care packages can be sent for the beginning of the Fall semester.

Fall Golf Tournament: Authur Packard has volunteered to run the Fall Charity Golf Tournament. The date is Monday, October 23. Location is Birkdale Country Club.

Family Summer Event: The St. Mark Knights summer family outing, originally set for a Kannapolis Intimidators baseball game on July 15, will be rescheduled.

Amazing Maize Maze Volunteers needed: Ten St. Mark Knights are needed for each day of the event at Rural Hill Farm. Work will consist of manning the towers to direct visitors. Lunch will be included each day.

Italian Night Dinner Dance set: Council Director Barry McCaa announced that the Italian Night dinner dance will be Friday, October 6 at St. Mark Church. Italian Night will be a semi-formal event. Stay tuned for more details.

Fish Fry II report: Ray Marr reported that the second St. Mark KofC2 Fish Fry netted more than $750 for Foundation for the Future. Marr said there will be at least two more Fish Fry events during Lent in 2007.

Insurance Report: KofC Insurance Representative Richard Keyser reported that the insurance sales goal for St. Mark Council for the 2005-2006 Fraternal Year was met.
