Whew! Stop the horse I want to get off!  The last few months have truly been a whirlwind. Thank you Knights for really stepping up and showing our Parish what a wonderful bunch of guys you are.  From the Parish Festival, to driving buses at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, to playing and sponsoring at our annual fall golf outing, to attending the Room at the Inn banquet, to attending the Eucharist Congress, to helping raise funds at the Amazing Maize Maze, to setting up and breaking down for the Christmas Bazaar, to standing alongside the VW Beetles and collecting raqffle funds, and most recently Festa Italia and Operation L.A.M.B. (Least Among My Brethren).  Some of these with dramatic results, some not, but all with the spirit of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.  I am sure there are some I missed. The list could go on and on because our Knight Brothers are involved in numerous other ministries that are helping our church grow physically and in faith. Speaking of the VW raffle: To me the results were not just a home run, they were a grand slam!  We should expect approximately $80,000 (out of the $103,000 collected) to go directly to the building fund. The raffle was not part of the Knights budget, but we really delivered the results. Thank you to all St. Mark Parishioners, Priests, Deacons, other ministries and church staff. The raffle was a wonderful example of how we can join together in our effort to build our church.  GK Ed Keller

November 6, 2006 Meeting Notes

  • State Kof C Adjutant Greg Kent and District Deputy Ed Kane attended the meeting. State Adjutant Kent presented St. Mark Council with the Father McGivney and Founders Award for Fraternal Year 2005-2006 (award is based on membership growth and insurance sales).  Kent said this award is noteworthy as the “rarest” Council-level recognition in NC. After hearing numerous event and activity reports, Kent praised St. Mark Council for as one of the most productive and active in the State.
  • Ed Keller received thank-you note from Donna Smith for the $300 donation to fund a “moon walk” attaction at the Parish Festival. Sixth and seventh grade students earned more than $2,000 with this attraction.
  • Chancellor Jim Lotito said that new seminarian addresses will be available within a few weeks for Knights who want to prepare care packages.
  • Membership director Chris O’Keefe reported that business was slow at the recent KofC Membership Blitz because of an abbreviated weekend Mass schedule. However, six cards were collected from men who expressed an interest in joining. O’Keefe said a First Degree will be scheduled sometime in December, perhaps before the December 4 Council meeting.
  • Council Director Barry McCaa reported on preparations for the November 10 Festa Italia.
  • Family Director Andy Kopchinski said a family night will be planned after the Christmas Holidays. The options are a Charlotte Checkers hockey game, or a Davidson College basketball game.
  • Arthur Packard reported that the October 23 Golf Tournment came very close to achieving the goal of raising $3,000 for charity. He thanked players, hole sponsors and gift sponsors (see list at front of newsletter.)  Packard has also volunteered to lead the Spring Golf Tournament. He said he will have a date for the Spring tournament sometime in December.

Volunteer needs

  • Dan Cedrone asked for volunteers to call previous purchasers of Christmas trees (this is where the bulk of the trees are sold)  and to man the parking lot on Saturday, December 2 – tree pick-up day. He also asked for a volunteer to run a weed eater in the pickup area at the edge of the parking lot.
  • Program Director Ray Marr noted that volunteers are needed on November 29 to help deliver and set up a large Christmas Tree in St. Mark Elementary School. Students will decorate the tree on November 30.
  • Operation L.A.M.B. Director Joe Scallan asked for volunteers to solicit donations at are grocery stores on Thanksgiving weekend.
  • Tom McGahey asked for additional volunteers for the January 5-7 Mid-Year Convention at the  University Hilton.  Approximately 13 St. Mark Knights have volunteered so far. One volunteer need is altar servers for Mass (Tom Rider will do the training.)
