August 6, 2007 Council Meeting Notes

Grand Knight’s Report

  • Shuttle drivers: A leader is needed to coordinate volunteer shuttle bus drivers from St. Mark Council at the upcoming fall races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (October 10-13). This biannual fundraising event typically nets around $1,700-1,800 for the Council’s charities. Grand Knight Bill Pugh was leading the event before taking office this summer.

  • Membership: In an effort to assess the “state of the council,” GK Pugh asked for volunteers to join him in contacting all of the Knights on the Council membership roster. The purpose is to extend invitations to the next Council meeting and to evaluate whether members have interest in participating in Council events and activities. There are more than 200 Knights on the St. Mark Council membership roster, and typical monthly attendance at Council meetings this summer has been 25-30. Further, the Council is in possession of 14 name badges that new Knights have never picked up.

Good of the Order – Guest presentations

  • 5K Race for the Faith: The starter’s pistol will fire at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, as runners raise money for the new church building. To participate or to volunteer, contact Bernardo Vasquez, 704-780-1524 or racestmark@hotmail.com. Kid’s race is at 10 a.m.

  • Mooresville Patriot’s Festival: On Saturday, November 10, Mooresville will host a patriotic celebration that is expected to attract 20,000 people. The purpose of the all-day event is to establish an annual Veteran’s Day celebration in Mooresville that will promote an appreciation for patriotic values in America. All proceeds will go to the Coalition to Salute American Heroes (assists wounded veterans) and to sponsor the Hospice Wing at Salisbury Veterans Administration Hospital. Area KofC Councils are encouraged to participate by setting up booths. (There is a booth rental fee, but Councils can keep their sales proceeds.) Individual Knights are needed for various volunteer positions. Additional information will be provided at the September 10 Council meeting, or read more at http://patriotsfestival.com/home.htm.

Council Business

  • Treasurer’s Report: Income for July was $469, and expenses were $735. Balance in the bank on July 30 was $12,533.

  • Committee Assignments: A number of Knights have volunteered to fill St. Mark leadership positions for the 2007-2008 Fraternal Year.

>         Membership Directors: There will be two Membership Directors to handle these responsibilities. Ray Fitzgerald will take one of the positions, and the second position remains open. Interested Knights should contact Deputy Grand Knight Sergio Miranda (contact information at the end of the newsletter.)

>         Church Director: Jimmy Carter

>         Family Director: Mark Yelanich

>         Youth Director: Mike Ducey

>         Community Director: Open Position

>         Council Director: Open Position

  • $500 sponsorship approved: The Council voted to purchase a $500 sponsorship for the 5K Race for the Faith, a St. Mark event that is raising money for the new church building. The money will buy space for the St. Mark Council logo on the official race T-shirt.

  • Financial secretary’s report: Financial secretary Jim Bossert reported that the Council’s books are in “excellent order.”

  • Father-Daughter Dance: The Council decided to move forward with organizing a Father-Daughter dance. The tentative date will be Saturday, October 5. Mike Ducey and Barry McCaa are organizing the event.

  • Operation LAMB Update (Least Among My Brethren): Operation LAMB director Joe Scallan reported that Tootsie Roll distribution at area grocery stores will take place on the weekend of October 26-28 this year. Traditionally, these activities happen around Thanksgiving, but the stores are more restrictive now about Holiday season fundraising.

  • New Insurance Field Agent: Former District Deputy Ed Kane has replaced Richard Keiser as the Knights of Columbus Insurance Field Agent for St. Mark Council. Kane is located in Mooresville. Contact information is listed at the end of the newsletter.

  • Volunteer opportunity: Richard Clancey said that Knights can earn $9 per hour for the Council by working a food tent at Festival in the Park in Freedom Park September 20-23. The food tent is operated by Gabe’s Oasis (Gabe Shapiro). The times are as follows: Thursday, Sept 20, 5-10 p.m. (2 Knights); Friday, Sept 21, 5-10 p.m. (3 Knights); Saturday, Sept 22, 8 a.m.-10 p.m. (4 Knights); and Sunday, noon-7 p.m. (3 Knights). If any Knights can lend a hand, contact Clancey at 704-609-4400.
