Eight St. Mark Knights Earn Fourth Degree

Congratulations to St. Mark Council’s new Fourth Degree Knights: Jimmy Carter,  Erik Engebrigtsen, Rich Hehn, Trevor Hehn, Andy Kopchinsky, Alan Mulligan, Joe Scallan, and Kevin Urban.

Grand Knight’s Message from Bill Pugh

Brother Knights: Congratulations are in order for the entire Council as the Father/Daughter dance was a tremendous success. We should all feel very positive about our sponsorship of an event that promotes both family and parish values and a greater sense of community.  Special thanks to Mike Ducey, Dan Cedrone and Barry McCaa for coordinating this event.

In an effort to conduct some additional social events within the Council, I will be proposing at the next meeting a Knights-only (and friends if desired) Poker & Game Tournament at an off-site location sometime during the first half of December. This will include a for fun only poker tournament, backgammon, chess or other games along with some food and beverage. Maybe the winner will get a basket of cheer at the end of the night.  Come prepared with any other ideas to discuss.

Consider what it means to be a steward of the great gifts that God has given to each of us.  We all have individual skills and talents that can be used for the greater good of those around us. Our Council is a fantastic medium through which we can exercise those gifts.

St. Mark Christmas Bazaar: Saturday, Nov 3  (8 am-3 pm)

The second annual St. Mark Christmas Bazaar, a fundraiser for the new St. Mark Church, is less than one week away. Last year, the event raised $10,000. You can support the Bazaar in two ways:

Provide volunteer muscle: Dozens of Knights are needed on Saturday when the Bazaar ends at 2:45 p.m. The entire Family Center must be cleared and then set up for the Saturday evening Mass by 4:30 p.m. A smaller number of volunteer Knights (5-6) are needed for set up on Friday at 2:45 p.m.

Ask your Spouse to attend: The Christmas Bazaar will be a great source for purchasing Christmas Gifts. There will be many hand-crafted items, including Rosary bracelets, holiday cards, Christmas ornaments, and baked goods. Special prizes will be awarded in raffles held throughout the day.

If you can volunteer, please let Mike or Kathleen Mullen know. Kathleen’s number is 704-777-1650.

Special Event Reports

Lowe’s Motor Speedway

Race coordinator Tom Sawicki would like to recognize the 14 Volunteers who drove Shuttle Buses at Lowe’s for the mid-October races: Andy Sikso, Dick Mahoney, Baron Fink, Mark Conter, Dick Christian, Chip Marshall, Joe Scallan, Tom Sawicki, Ed Keller, Mike Leahy, John O’Neill, Todd Williamson, Bill Pugh and Adam Gochnauer. A financial report will be available at the November 5 Council Meeting. Sawicki also provided a copy of a post-race letter to all volunteers from Jerry Pace, KofC coordinator for the race:

Thank you for making the fall race of 2007 the most successful ever. I talked to our bosses (Doug Crammer and Lindsey Spiegal) today. They said we did an awesome job this fall - lots of compliments and no complaints. Doug thought this was a first for as long as he's been associated with the track. I have never heard of an event without a complaint. I take my hat off to all of you.

Father-Daughter Dance

Dan Cedrone, Barry McCaa and Mike Ducey coordinated the event. Ducey provided this report:

The very first Father-Daughter Dance was held by the Knights of Columbus on October 5 in the Family Center.  The theme was a "Crazy Hat" Dance. Attendance was 170 (100 daughters and 70 dads). There was no admission charge, but each family was asked to bring a snack or dessert and a canned good to donate to the local poor. Father Pat kicked off the event with a prayer, followed by welcoming remarks from GK Bill Pugh. Games included Simon Says, Hat Parade and Musical Chairs. Each daughter in attendance received at least one prize during the event - thanks to the efforts of Dan and Laura Cedrone. Music was terrific, thanks to volunteer Scott Campbell from St Mark's. Barry McCaa ensured that the soft drinks kept flowing ( after having surgery on his elbow the same week ).

October 1 Meeting Notes

Grand Knight Report

GK Bill Pugh noted that St. Mark has 214 Knights listed on the active membership rolls, while typical monthly meeting attendance is 25-30. This means the Council is paying significant per-capita dues (more than $1,200 per year) to Supreme for a large number of Knights who  do not participate in Council activities. Pugh recommended that Knights who are active should always be prepared to mention Council activities when they see a Brother Knight who has been absent from meetings for a significant length of time. “Ask them to participate,” Pugh said. “Whether in a major or a minor way. Tell them they are always welcome.”

Treasurer’s Report:  Income for the month of September was $371, and expenses were $552. Total balance in the bank as of September 30 was $13,549.

October 29 Charity Golf Tournament at Birkdale: Coordinator Art Packard said the Golf Tournaments typically bring the Council about $3,000 in revenue. He said that $3,000 could easily be boosted to $4,200 if six more Knights got one business each to sponsor a hole, and if four more teams signed up to play. Packard said volunteers are needed on the day of the Tournament to help with organization, signups and driving beverage carts.

Pumpkin sale deferred for 2007: GK Bill Pugh explained that he decided against “rolling the dice” to hold a pumpkin sale this year because the event would put a significant amount of the Council’s money at risk (approximately $4,500) with too little time for preparation.

Operation LAMB (Least Among My Brethren) Operation LAMB coordinator Joe Scallan said the campaign has raised $1,737 in Tootsie Roll distribution at area grocery stores. Scallan added that he has the tentative approval for a weekend fundraising at the  Huntersville Lowe’s store. The local Bi-Lo store has also been approached.

Council Votes

§         $500 to purchase a table at the annual Room at the Inn banquet

§         $300 for the middle school Fall Festival on October 26.
